Dunstablians Griffins 20 - 12 Chess Valley
The Griffins hosted Chess valley after a string of bad results and were hoping to change this; this looked promising as the Griffins had possibly their strongest team of the session so far with multiple 1st team caps between them. Some good back interplay from within Dees’ 22 enabled Matt Fitt to run 60 plus metres beating his opposite wing to score, the kick went wide and the score remained 5-0.
Dunstable had a very dominant scrum (even pushing Chess Valley back with 7 on 8 after Gavin Stout received a yellow card for a high tackle). Despite this Dees were unable to take advantage of the early dominance. Eventually Chess Valley scored as a result of some poor defence, the kick was short and the score remained 5-5
Dunstable were able to put some good phases together which enabled Will Ludgate and Joe Pratt to score impressive tries. Charlie Stephens converted 1 of these 2 tries bringing the score to 17-5. Unfortunately Dees couldn’t finish Chess Valley off as they fought back to score a converted try bring the score to 17-12 late into the second half
From here the advice from coach Harry Barrett was clear - kick the ball deep, get a penalty and kick for goal, and thankfully Dees made good on Harry’s advice. Charlie Stephens lined up to take the game-winning kick and slotted it through bringing the score to 20-12 with seconds to go. Chess Valley did kick off again, but this didn’t go 10 and the Griffins got their first win of the season.
Man of the match: Charlie Stephens
