Under-16s: Leighton Buzzard vs Dunstablians
This Sunday, Dunstable U16s made the trip to Leighton Buzzard for the quarterfinals of the Beds Cup.
The team was led by captain and flanker Arthur, who earned the captain's armband through his commitment, discipline, and dedication to the team.
Leighton Buzzard kicked off, playing with the wind and sun in their favor. Early in the match, both teams attempted to stretch the play across the width of the field, with both sides showing strength at the counter-ruck. A misplaced pass from Leighton Buzzard was intercepted by Dunstable centre Jaylan inside Leighton Buzzard’s 22, and on 12 minutes, Dunstable scored the opening try of the game. Fly-half Heinrich swiftly converted.
From the restart, Leighton Buzzard kicked deep, but Dunstable quickly regained possession and moved the ball efficiently across the pitch. Winger Rylan surged down the left wing, evading Leighton Buzzard’s defensive line, and within two minutes, Dunstable had their second try. Heinrich added the conversion.
Leighton Buzzard kicked deep once again from the restart, but Dunstable’s forwards retained the ball and played through several phases. Scrum-half Hubert spotted a gap in Leighton Buzzard’s defense, executing a quick pick-and-go to break the line and score Dunstable’s third try. Heinrich converted.
Leighton Buzzard stayed focused and, following the restart, managed to turn over possession. They worked the ball down their left wing, and despite some strong tackles from Dunstable, the defensive line was eventually breached, with Leighton Buzzard scoring in the far left corner. The conversion was missed.
Leighton Buzzard’s momentum continued after the reset, as they stretched the play across the field, breaking Dunstable’s defensive line on the far right. This time, the conversion was successful.
Dunstable responded with a high, short kick from the restart. The forwards and backs combined effectively, winning the ball. Dunstable transitioned quickly from defense to attack, with tighthead prop Luke powering through the Leighton Buzzard defense to score Dunstable’s fourth try in the far left corner. The conversion was missed, and the halftime whistle blew with the score at 12–26 to Dunstable.
The second half began similarly to the first, with both teams attacking and defending across the pitch. Ten minutes in, centre Jaylan ripped the ball from Leighton Buzzard’s back line and broke through to score his second try, Dunstable’s fifth. Heinrich converted.
Immediately after the restart, Dunstable put Leighton Buzzard under pressure again. Lock Blake took the ball at pace just five meters from the try line and powered through for Dunstable’s sixth try. Heinrich converted.
Dunstable’s back line grew in confidence, with Jaylan orchestrating attacks. He spotted space across the pitch and executed a perfect kick, which winger Jack caught and converted into Dunstable’s seventh try. The conversion was missed.
Within three minutes, Dunstable were back on the scoreboard. Heinrich took the ball at pace, breaking through Leighton Buzzard’s defensive line and scoring Dunstable’s eighth try. The conversion was missed.
Despite continued pressure from Dunstable, Leighton Buzzard remained composed, scoring a well-worked try after the restart. Their back line moved the ball quickly, and they found the space to score in the far left corner. The conversion was missed.
In the closing stages, Dunstable added three more tries. The first came from captain Arthur, who had moved to the wing due to injuries. His first involvement as a winger saw him cross the line in the far right corner following several well-timed passes. The second try came from tighthead prop Luke, who once again powered through Leighton Buzzard’s defense with a strong run. The third try came from lock Blake, who took the ball at pace, running at an angle to exploit space close to the try line. He placed the ball down to end the scoring. The final whistle blew after the conversion, with the score 17–67 in favor of Dunstable.
Dunstable’s Man of the Match was awarded to centre Jaylan. His defensive strength, commitment at the breakdown, passing accuracy, and kicking ability were key to his team’s success. Jaylan’s unrelenting effort from start to finish was outstanding.
